Towel Rack FEA

Fall 2020

I worked with a team to design an experiment to collect and analyze data indicating what kind of facemask has the least humidity buildup.

Experimental Setup

To simulate a human breathing in a mask, we put a vaporizer in the tank of a humidifier to produce a similar air stream to breath. We connected this tank through a bag and a tube into the mouth of a 3D printed human mouth. Next to the mouth, we fitted a humidity sensor. We hooked three different types of masks over the face and collected the humidity levels over 5 minute sessions of breathing.

Data Analysis

We analyzed our data in MATLAB using different statistical methods. Our results were not definitive, but showed a trend that the KN95 had the least humidity buildup. The cloth mask consistently had the most. We compared out data against a human breathing into the mask to verify that it was valid data.
